Orphic Petition to Jupiter

Hermetics points the student toward Knowledge and Understanding of the ordering principles by which everything exists and the relationships between causes and effects. Magic and Alchemy are the metaphoric contexts of praxis by which such Knowledge can be applied to shape emergent reality.

Orphic Hymn or Prayer is an ancient modality, borrowed in formula from the mystery schools of Egypt, and framed in the allegorical context of Greek mythos. The practice is Magical in essence, employing knowledge of Astrology, Hermetic Principles and the power of Framing and ritual invocation to code and direct one’s intention or Desire, in ‘right relationship’ between Human and the Divine.

Within Hermetica Reiterated, the concept of Orphic Petition is useful for two reasons. First, it engages the use of language as a framing tool of agency—words spoken with intention are participatory in the shaping of reality. Second, the Orphic hymn offers a template for the Hermetic practitioner to engage consciously with the numinous, invoking presence and forming an alliance with the greater powers that order both Nature and Mind through the deliberate use of archetypal language and motif.

This piece is a “prayer”, written in the Orphic tradition, petitioning the divine generative field of possibility, during key astrological transits relevant to that aspect of the divine we associate with the archetypal signatures of Jupiter, Jove, Zeus, Indra and even Thor of the Æsir pantheon.

Such petitions, unlike Christian practice, are not meant to be engaged in a fawning, plaintive stance.

In the context of Orphic Petition, deity is to be understood as a property of archetype—an iconic, symbolic and functional expression of enduring and animate universal principles, rather than anything so pedestrian as a literal supernatural being. The act of petition addresses the living cosmic pattern represented by the archetype, not the literal worship of a separate, external god.

This Orphic Petition performs a dual function, deepening the allegorical archetype in the mind and the psyche of the petitioner, as well as opening an invocational channel to the living pattern or force represented by the iconic archetype.

Founder and Establisher of Order, 
magnanimous, thundering, lightning.

Unconquered, highest power,
True King among the gods,
Fortunate and Bestower of Good Fortune alike,
even as you bore the horn of plenty in your youth.

Praise be to your benevolence.
Vanquisher of the titans and tamer of old grandfather time,
Mighty Lord of the Gods of Heaven and Earth, 
Father of Knowledge, 
the supreme suitor, 
Most Virile.

Even The Chariot of The Sun,
and The Huntress of The Moon,
are set by your appointment.
 
Jove, Lord of Joy and Judgement,
Wise, powerful, revealer of the truth, 
The Judge of Order, of all under The Sun.
Founder, architect of Alliance
Commander of Allegiance,
Lord of Expansion, Wealth and their Wisdoms.
